Finding Images

Finding images can be difficult, but there are many online resources available. Below are some links to help you locate images that can be used freely for scholarly purposes. For a more comprehensive list, see the Reed College Library images guide.

Interdisciplinary digital library of images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences. ARTstor content is now also available in JSTOR in preparation for the sunsetting of the separate ARTstor platform in August 2024.

Open Access Repositories

Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan provides free access to images of many artworks in the collection. Look for the Open Access for Scholarly Content (OASC) Icon on the site.
J. Paul Getty Museum
The Getty provides free digital images of its holdings to be used for any purpose.
Open Access Image Source List
Extensive list of open access image sources from Nanyang Technological University Library.
Art Institute of Chicago
Thousands of artworks in the museum's wide-ranging collection.
British Museum
More than 2,000,000 records available, representing more than 3,500,000 objects. Many records have one or more images.
