Color Modes

Using Different Color Modes

When working with images, you want to make sure that you know which color mode to use and why. If the image is going to be used in another document (presentations, websites, screens, etc.) then you want to use a color mode supported by digital platforms (RGB). If you intend to print the image, then it needs to use a color mode that is designed for printers (CMYK).

  • CMYK is typically used with print media and uses four tones: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black.
  • RGB is a color mode that uses combinations of Red, Green and Blue light to create visual displays of color information on screens.
