Young Scholars

A research guide for the Young Scholars program at Reed College

Library Information

Using Library Materials

Your ID is your library card and there is a 28 day check out for most items, except media from the IMC and PARC (usually 3-6 days.) Laptops and other hardware have a 24 hour check out. You can check your account and renew items online using your Kerberos ID. (Same as your email). Summit and Interlibrary Loan materials are not available to Young Scholars.

Reserves

Information about accessing and using reserves can be found on the library website.

Research help
Visit the library help page to chat or email with a librarian. Each subject area has a designated librarian who is available for one-on-one consultation. To find the subject librarian for an area, check out the Library Liaisons by Academic Department list.

Printing

Information about computers and printing can be found on the library website. Young Scholars usually get a $25 yearly print credit.

Citation and Copyright

The Reed College library offers comprehensive guidelines to Citing Sources and Copyright.

Academic writing requires that you acknowledge use of the intellectual work of others.  These are some of the most common situations that require that you identify and give credit to the work of others:

  • A direct quote from a text.
  • A direct quote from someone else’s writing about that text.
  • A paraphrase of the ideas of another writer.

It is not necessary to give credit for commonly known facts or expressions. [1]
