Chemistry Writing Resources

Full Citations vs. Publication Citations

It is important to note that citations might appear differently depending on what type of resource you are using. If you are looking through a database or the library catalog, a full citation will be displayed. Sometimes, publications will shorten the citation for the sake of space on the page in a specific magazine or journal. This shortening usually cuts out the article DOI and/or abbreviates other information in the citation.

Understanding how to include a full citation in the ACS style for your own writing despite finding a shortened citation in professional publications is extremely important. If you have citation formatting questions, please feel free to contact your subject librarian or the library help desk.

Here is a full citation in APA 7th Edition Format from the library catalog.

Notice how the citation in the library catalog differs from the citations in the Reference List in this article in Science. The DOI's are missing from all citations and titles are abbreviated to save space. This is not a full citation.

Chemistry Drawing Software

Although some of the databases we went over have drawing programs built in, you might want to use programs with more flexibility. Reed Chemistry department now has ChemDraw!

Some good, FREE (or nearly free) programs include:

ChemSketch (ACD Labs)

Marvin Sketch (ChemAxon)
