Ebook Providers

Our catalog may link to ebooks on their original publisher platform, or you may be accessing them through an aggregator like ProQuest or EBSCO. You can see a longer list of ebook providers in our collection, but here are some of the most common ebook platforms you may encounter:

  • Cambridge Core - We have both purchased and subscribed titles on Cambridge University Press's general platform. Our ebooks are available to download, no restrictions.
  • EBSCOhost - We have both purchased and subscribed titles on this platform. Printing, copying, and downloading limits vary by title. You can create a personal account to access saved content (do not use the option to sign in with Google).
  • ElgarOnline - We have purchased two Environmental Studies collections from Edward Elgar Publishing. They will appear in catalog searches, but you can also view title lists online: Elgar Essentials for Climate Change and Environmental Policy.
  • JSTOR - You can download chapters in PDF format with no restrictions. Copy and paste is allowed.
  • Oxford Academic - We have both purchased and subscribed titles on Oxford University Press's general platform. Our ebooks are available to download, no restrictions.
  • ProQuest Ebook Central - We have both purchased and subscribed titles on this platform. Printing, copying, and downloading limits vary by title. You can use your regular Kerberos username and password to sign in to Ebook Central and access saved content.
  • ScienceDirect - Ebook content from Elsevier. You can download chapters or full books in PDF format with no restrictions.
  • SpringerNatureLink - Ebook content from Springer Nature. You can download chapters or full books in PDF format with no restrictions.

Downloading Full Ebooks

Some ebooks that we get from aggregators like EBSCO or ProQuest may require you to install an app or third party software if you want to download the whole ebook, rather than specific chapters or page ranges. In these cases, downloading the full book counts as "checking out" the ebook, and the checkout periods for downloaded titles will vary.

Ebook Central Reader App

As of July 2025, ProQuest has a new, dedicated app for reading ebooks you have checked out from Ebook Central. You will recognize this app is necessary when the phrase “free third-party software” appears in the Availability section of the ebook details on Ebook Central.

To install the app:

  1. Open Ebook Central and make sure you are logged in (you may have to go through the standard Reed login process)
  2. In another tab, open the app download page and download the version of the app that matches your device
  3. Once it is installed, open the app, where you’ll see a welcome message
  4. Go back to the Ebook Central tab, select Profile
  5. Look down the page for the line EBC APP DEVICES and select the link for Manage Devices
  6. On the Manage Your Devices page, select the button that says Get Login Code
  7. Enter the registration code into the app on your device and submit
  8. Once the app syncs, you will see your “bookshelf”

You are all set up and ready to read!

Most people will probably set this app up on a laptop first, but you can register up to six devices with your account by following these instructions. All devices you have registered will appear on the Manage Your Devices page in your Profile, and you can remove a device whenever you want. Your bookshelf and annotations will sync between devices.

Adobe Digital Editions

Some EBSCOhost ebooks may require free software called Adobe Digital Editions in order to checkout and download a full ebook. (Adobe Digital Editions can be installed on most computers and smartphones, but if your phone is not compatible, you might try the Bluefire Reader.) Typically, notes, highlights, and bookmarks made in downloaded titles with Adobe Digital Editions will not be saved once the download period has expired, so you will want to document those things in your own notes.
