Our catalog may link to ebooks on their original publisher platform, or you may be accessing them through an aggregator like ProQuest or EBSCO. You can see a longer list of ebook providers in our collection, but here are some of the most common ebook platforms you may encounter:
Some ebooks that we get from aggregators like EBSCO or ProQuest may require you to install an app or third party software if you want to download the whole ebook, rather than specific chapters or page ranges. In these cases, downloading the full book counts as "checking out" the ebook, and the checkout periods for downloaded titles will vary.
As of July 2025, ProQuest has a new, dedicated app for reading ebooks you have checked out from Ebook Central. You will recognize this app is necessary when the phrase “free third-party software” appears in the Availability section of the ebook details on Ebook Central.
To install the app:
You are all set up and ready to read!
Most people will probably set this app up on a laptop first, but you can register up to six devices with your account by following these instructions. All devices you have registered will appear on the Manage Your Devices page in your Profile, and you can remove a device whenever you want. Your bookshelf and annotations will sync between devices.
Some EBSCOhost ebooks may require free software called Adobe Digital Editions in order to checkout and download a full ebook. (Adobe Digital Editions can be installed on most computers and smartphones, but if your phone is not compatible, you might try the Bluefire Reader.) Typically, notes, highlights, and bookmarks made in downloaded titles with Adobe Digital Editions will not be saved once the download period has expired, so you will want to document those things in your own notes.
