MALS

Library resources for MALS (Master of Arts in Liberal Studies) students at Reed College

Getting Started

These reference materials provide a broad overview of large topics and identify significant themes, keywords, authors, arguments and theories. They also identify influential texts and resources to dig deeper into a topic. This is an excellent place to start the library research process for a particular topic.

Finding Books

Searching the Library Catalog

In the Library Catalog, you can find and request physical items such as print books and media. You can access electronic resources such as journal articles, e-books, and streaming media. You can also find special, non-circulating items such as archival materials, artist books, zines, and other ephemera.

When searching the catalog, you can select one of the following options.

  • Books, Articles, and More: Thousands of journal articles, along with Reed and Summit items.
  • Reed + Summit: Books and media from Reed and local library lending partners.
  • Reed Library Only: All on-campus books and media.
  • Course Reserves: All current physical and electronic course reserves, including books, articles, and media
  • Reed College Theses: All theses going back to 1915
  • IMC (Instructional Media Center): Specializes in equipment and DVDs
  • PARC (Performing Arts Resource Center): Specializes in CDs, LPs
  • Special Collections and Archives: Specialized in rare, non-circulating archival materials

Journal Articles

These databases allow you to search the contents of periodicals to identify articles on your topic. If you find a citation for an article that is not linked to full text, check the Library Catalog to see if Reed subscribes to the journal and if we have the particular issue. If the article you are looking for is not available at Reed, you can request it from Interlibrary loan.
